Biography:

CIA – Dr. Michael Doran

Dr Michael Doran completed a BSc (Genetics) and BEng (Chemical) at the University of Alberta in Canada.  As an Engineering graduate he worked as a Project Manager for Exxon/Mobile where he directed the development of heavy oil fields in Northern Alberta.  His passion for biomedical research motivated him to relocate to Sydney Australia and undertake a PhD in Biomedical Engineering.  Under the superb supervision of Dr Robert Nordon (UNSW) his PhD contributed to the development of a now commercialized bioreactor for stem cell expansion.  The bioreactor developed through Dr Doran’s PhD was integrated with CaridianBCT’s dialysis robotics platform and details on this product can be found at: http://www.terumobct.com/location/emea/products-and-services/Pages/Quantum-Cell-Expansion-System.aspx.com/quantumsystem/.  Whilst the commercial nature of the project did restricted publications, Dr Doran did file one patent.

Following his PhD (2006), Dr Doran completed two postdoctoral fellowships split between the University of Queensland (UQ) and the Mater Medical Research Institute (MMRI).  During this time he filed two more patents, lectured a 4th year Engineering Subject for three years at UQ, mentored postgraduate students, published a number of high-impact papers (7 A*), won UniQuest Trailblazer Innovation awards in 3 consecutive years, won 4 external competitive grants, and presented internationally at a number of conferences.

In 2010, Dr Doran relocated to QUT where he was awarded the prestigious QUT Vice Chancellor’s Fellowship.  Dr. Doran is a group leader, and his laboratory (Stem Cell Therapies Laboratory) is situated at the Translational Research Institute (TRI) on the Princess Alexandra Hospital campus.  He is the direct supervisor of six PhD students and one postdoctoral fellow.  Since 2009 Dr Doran has published 24 articles, two of which are book chapters, has won 7 external CIA grants, and two CIB NHMRC Project Grants. Dr Doran was awarded an on-going position at QUT starting in 2012.
