Position:

  • Assistant Professor, Department of Surgery, Laval University

Credentials:

  • MD at Queen's University

Biography:

Dr. Toren completed his medical school at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario and his urology residency and clinical uro-oncology fellowship at the University of Toronto. Subsequently, he completed a two-year research fellowship at the Vancouver Prostate Centre at the University of British Columbia under the mentorship of Drs. Martin Gleave and Amina Zoubeidi. His work during this time focused on mechanisms of resistance in castrate resistant prostate cancer, particularly enzalutamide resistant prostate cancer. His research during this time was highly productive and he has published over 20 manuscripts, and presented at numerous national and international meeting. Notably, two of his projects during his research fellowship contributed to the development of ongoing clinical trials for men with castrate resistant prostate cancer.

As he starts his own laboratory in Quebec City at Laval University, Dr. Toren aims to continue to impact patient care by utilizing pre-clinical models and correlative studies to advance our understanding of the underlying of biology of how and why prostate tumours become resistant to current therapies. With a better understanding of how prostate cancer reacts to the conditions in our bodies and different treatments given clinicians can better select and develop treatments which are efficacious and durable.  His current projects include the role of steroids in influencing mechanisms of prostate cancer resistance, biomarker discovery, and rationale combination therapies co-targeting PI3K/Akt/mTOR signalling pathway.
