He also currently holds a Tier II Canada Research Chair in Biomedical Optics. Prior to relocating to PEI in 2008, he held academic positions with the Physics Department at Ryerson University (Toronto) and the Department of Medical Biophysics at the University of Toronto. Dr Whelan’s research interest is in the field of biomedical optics with particular emphasis on optoacoustic imaging, Raman spectroscopy and laser thermal therapy for cancer diagnosis, therapy and treatment assessment applications. He publishes in both leading biomedical journals (i.e. Physics in Medicine and Biology, Journal of Biomedical Optics) and fundamental physics journals (i.e. Physical Review E). He has collaborated with and has been a consultant to a number of biophotonics companies. Dr Whelan has served on the Peer Review Panel for the CIHR Institute of Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis (2006) and NSERC’s Grant Selection Committee for General Physics (2008-2010).
